History

Moretown, Vermont was originally chartered in 1763, with a grant for 6 square miles of land. The town was then settled in 1790, with the first families including the Munsons, Haseltines, Parchers, Heatons, and Bartletts. Town meetings began in 1792.

Talc, the state mineral of Vermont, became an important industry in the town. 125 acres were purchased in the town in 1913 to build a talc processing facility. Though no longer in operation, the facility remains as a landmark of the town’s history. Moretown is now largely residential, and its residents commute to surrounding areas for work.

More recently, the town was one of 12 to receive a grant from the state to enhance its internet capabilities. This has resulted in a new website and technological upgrades for the town. The town suffered extensive damage during Hurricane Irene in 2011. More than 60 homes and businesses were flooded, including the church, school, fire station, and town offices.

Geography

Moretown is located in Washington County, Vermont. It covers over 40 square miles, and has a population of approximately 1,700 people. It is west of Montpelier, and south of Waterbury.

As part of the Mad River Valley, much of the economy of the surrounding towns is heavily influenced by the ski tourism industry. With popular ski resorts throughout the Green Mountains, residents of Moretown don’t have far to go to enjoy the many recreational opportunities that are offered year-round.

Though there are few businesses within the town itself, residents have easy access to larger towns where they find employment. The town center is still a bustle of local activity, hosting meetings and forums for the town.

The general store

Moretown has only one retail establishment: the general store. Much like the general stores throughout small-town history, this serves as a community meeting place, grocery store, gas station, and deli. These stores got their start during colonial times when a single store owner would be responsible for providing all store-bought goods to local residents. Living away from urban areas, this was often the only way for people to get the items that they needed.

This slice of Americana is alive and well in Moretown. This small Vermont town has few other businesses, mainly independent business owners working in plumbing, carpentry, and other service industries.
